Opening Up To Greater Possibilities

In this blog and video I explore the benefit of opening up to what excites us. Lasting change is incremental, it doesn’t require us to leap off a cliff, rather, it requires us to slowly open up to new ways of experiencing ourselves.

Giving Our Creative Impulses Room To Breathe

Take a moment to think about what you really enjoy doing, or remember how you used to enjoy it, or always wanted to try something because you have an inkling that you might really enjoy it! That’s how we begin to make space for infusing more creativity into our lives.

"Roses Grow In The Desert" is a song I wrote highlighting the insidious consequences of childhood neglect.

Our first "heroes" are our first caregivers, we carry the experience of our early development inside of us like a map. This map is so seamlessly built into our awareness, reactions, and understanding, we often don't recognize the scope of its influence and the choices we make.

On this 2023 International Women's Day, I want to honour the heroic work of the many courageous and powerful women I have had the privilege to work with.

May we all keep expanding our awareness, emotional courage and self-compassion.

Creative exploration expands our self confidence.

The song, “Love Is An Energy”, celebrates loving kindness and emotional connection.

I created this video to accompany “Love Is An Energy”, a song I wrote and recorded ten years ago. It takes a page out of an earlier sound and vision journal, a time when I struggled to overcome critical, undermining parts of myself that routinely shut down my creativity.

In retrospect I see how determined I was, I eventually released an album of original songs in 2011. I could not have created the album without the supportive collaboration of my producer Mike Rocha. Being engaged in the creative process was a joyous endeavour, being engaged in creating alongside others magnified the pleasure even further.

We are born in relationship, and the hardships we may face can be softened when we are in relationship with a “Loving Other”. “Love Is An Energy” celebrates loving kindness, emotional connection, and empathy, an environment where creativity flourishes.

People maintain the belief, “I’m not creative” or “I don’t have the talent to create, paint, write, sing, or dance. It would be more accurate to assert, “I find it hard to let myself explore, make mistakes, and just play.” Creative expression is our birthright, our potential pathways to joy, pleasure and excitement. Creativity is not merely the domain of artistic pursuits. It comes down to having the courage to discover our desires.

What do you love? What have you enjoyed in the past? If you’re able to slow down for a moment, close your eyes and take in a full deep breath or two. Take a minute, and reflect on what you might like to try for the first time, or return to once again? Stay open without judging whatever comes up. As you open your eyes, write down what you discovered.

The more we allow ourselves to exercise our creative muscles, easing into their use, stretching and strengthening them, the more we stretch, strengthen and build our own sense of self.

“The true artist is one who lives completely, harmoniously, who does not divide his art from living, whose very life is that expression, whether it be a picture, music or his behavior, who has not divorced his expression on a canvas or in music or in stone from his daily conduct, daily living.”
